SINHALA & TAMIL NEW YEAR

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year is one of the most important traditional festivals in Sri Lanka. It is celebrated in April and marks the end of the old year and the beginning of the new year. This festival is celebrated by both Sinhala and Tamil communities, showing unity and harmony among people.

The New Year is based on the movement of the sun from Pisces to Aries. During this time, people follow traditional customs and rituals. Before the New Year, houses are cleaned and old things are removed to welcome good luck and prosperity. At the auspicious time, people light the hearth and prepare traditional foods.

Traditional foods such as kiribath (milk rice), kavum, kokis, and aluwa are prepared and shared with family members and neighbors. People wear new clothes, visit relatives, and exchange greetings. Children enjoy playing traditional games like onchilli padiima and olinda keliya.

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year teaches us values such as respect, kindness, sharing, and togetherness. It is a time to forget past problems and start the new year with peace and happiness. This beautiful festival reminds us of our rich culture and the importance of living in harmony.
